APPROACHES AND ACTIONS

In most fields of action, social work is confronted with questions of migration relating to clients, communities, professionals and organisations. Social work is also challenged by discourses, ideas of normality and norms and changing border regimes. Different approaches and attitudes have been developed over time to meet the challenges associated with migration. Resources fields as well as the professional understanding of social work are highly influenced by political and legal frameworks. Social workers are also engaged in lobbying, political activism and social movements against exclusion, disadvantages, discrimination and racism to promote social change and social justice.

 

The course "Migration and social work" aims to

  • give students an overview of different approaches, possibilities of action and professional understandings of migration within social work
  • encourage debates about the different assumptions and norms that govern our discourse of migration
  • strengthen the development of a professional position in this field and to enhance their scope of action.

 

The target groups are 

students doing their Bachelor's degree in social work at one of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences and students of their international partner universities. All lectures and workshops will be held in English, an intermediate level is therefore required.
